Types of Traditional Houses in Enga
Posted by Dorish on September 9, 2010
Hello again, i know i haven’t been gone for long. Well the wheather in Wapenamanda District in Enga Province of PNG is so cold and dull yet i just love the atmosphere surrounding it. Wouldn’t change the weather at this moment. Not yet anyway.
I have personal project that I have planned. Have been for the last few weeks, mentally imagined how my traditional dream house would be built like. with the exterior and interior materials so easily available yet so far away. This dream home of mine will eventually come to pass now that a piece of land has been given to me for free by a friend. I have already designed how my traditional house will look like and have listed the bush materials that come with it…and boy am I so excited about it. Am forever grateful my husband (Rodney) is willing to help were needed yet the design is pure ME. Will keep you all informed of my ‘TRADITIONAL DREAM HOME PROJECT’.
Since relocating up to the Highlands region of PNG, the types of traditional houses have always caught my attention. In the Enga Province, the design itself is fascinating and unique portraying the traditional culture and the climate that is attached with. I have never slept in a traditional house as yet other than the haus kuk as in-house cook literally means the kitchen that belong to my mother in-law. Generally, traditional houses in Papua New Guinea are built differently depending on the geographical location and the climate.
Below are some of the pics i took of a few traditional houses while out for a walk a few days ago…
